Abstract:
This is a powerful account of how the ruin and resurrection of Zhuangzi in modern China's literary history correspond to the rise and fall of modern Chinese individuality. The book highlights two central philosophical themes of Zhuangzi: the absolute spiritual freedom and the rejection of absolute and fixed views on right and wrong. It argues that the twentieth-century reinterpretation and appropriation of these two important philosophical themes best testify to the dilemma and inner struggle of modern Chinese intellectuals
Table of Contents:
Guo Moruo: radically changing attitudes toward Zhuangzi
Hu Shi: biological evolutionism and Zhuangzi
Lu Xun: the persistent rejection of Zhuangzi
Zhou Zuoren: the unconscious and troubled semi-Zhuangzi
Lin Yutang: Zhuangzi travels to the West
Fei Ming: from artistic transcendence to political kitsch
The unlucky fate of Zhuangzi
The resurrection of Zhuangzi in the 1980s
Yan Lianke's vacillation: to be or not to be Zhuangzi
Gao Xingjian: the triumph of the modern Zhuangzi

三角縁神獣鏡と東アジア世界・続 (Triangle-rimmed Deity and Beast Mirrors and East Asia・Part 2)

Abstract:
Table of Contents:

Inner Asia and the Spatial Politics of Empire: Archaeology, Mobility, and Culture Contact
Author:
William Honeychurch
Publisher:
Springer
Publication Year:
2015
Abstract:
This monograph uses the latest archaeological results from Mongolia and the surrounding areas of Inner Asia to propose a novel understanding of nomadic statehood, political economy, and the nature of interaction with ancient China. In contrast to the common view of the Eurasian steppe as a dependent periphery of Old World centers, this work views Inner Asia as a locus of enormous influence on neighboring civilizations, primarily through the development and transmission of diverse organizational models, technologies, and socio-political traditions. This work explores the spatial management of political relationships within the pastoral nomadic setting during the first millennium BCE and argues that a culture of mobility, horse-based transport, and long-distance networking promoted a unique variant of statehood. Although states of the eastern steppe were geographically large and hierarchical, these polities also relied on techniques of distributed authority, multiple centers, flexible structures, and ceremonialism to accommodate a largely mobile and dispersed populace. This expertise in “spatial politics” set the stage early on for the expansionistic success of later Asian empires under the Mongols and Manchus.
Inner Asia and the Spatial Politics of Empire brings a distinctly anthropological treatment to the prehistory of Mongolia and is the first major work to explore key issues in the archaeology of eastern Eurasia using a comparative framework. The monograph adds significantly to anthropological theory on interaction between states and outlying regions, the emergence of secondary complexity, and the growth of imperial traditions. Based on this approach, the window of Inner Asian prehistory offers a novel opportunity to investigate the varied ways that complex societies grow and the processes articulating adjacent societies in networks of mutual transformation.
Table of Contents:
Chapter 1: Voices from the Steppe
Chapter 2: Overcoming the Tyranny of Distance: Culture Contact and Politics
Chapter 3: Solving Contradictions: Nomads and Political Complexity
Chapter 4: The Heartland of Inner Asia: Mongolia and Steppe Pastoral Nomadism
Chapter 5: The Late and Final Bronze Age Cultures of Mongolia, 1400-700 BC
Chapter 6: The Surrounding Bronze Age World: Kazakhstan and South Siberia, 1300-700 BC
Chapter 7: At the Edge of Inner Asia: The Northern Zone and States of China, 1200-700 BC
Chapter 8: Nomadic Alternatives: Forming the State on Horseback
Chapter 9: Not of Place, but of Path: Nomads on the World Stage
Chapter 10: Steppe Cores, Sedentary Peripheries, and the Statecraft of Empire.

Language, Discourse, and Praxis in Ancient China
Author:
Zhenbin Sun
Publisher:
Springer
Publication Year:
2015
Abstract:
This book investigates Chinese comprehension and treatment of the relationship between language and reality. The work examines ancient Chinese philosophy through the pair of concepts known as ming 名-shi 實.
By analyzing the pre-Qin thinkers’ discourse on ming and shi, the work explores how Chinese philosophers dealt with issues not only in language but also in ontology, epistemology, ethics, axiology, and logic. Through this discourse analysis, readers are invited to rethink the relationship of language to thought and behavior. The author criticizes and corrects vital misunderstandings of Chinese culture and highlights the anti-dualism and pragmatic character of Chinese thoughts. The rich meaning of the ming-shi pair is displayed by revealing its connection to other philosophical issues. The chapters show how discourse on language and reality shapes a central characteristic of Chinese culture, the practical zhi. They illuminate the interplay of Chinese theories of language and Dao as Chinese wisdom and worldview.
Readers who are familiar with pragmatics and postmodernism will recognize the common points in ancient Chinese philosophy and contemporary Western philosophy, as they emerge through these chapters. The work will particularly appeal to scholars of philosophy, philosophy of language, communication studies and linguistics.
Table of Contents:
Introduction
1. Methodological and historical inquiry
2. Four notions of names
3. Synthesis of language and reality
4. Moral practice and language
5. Sociopolitical practice and language
6. Linguistic practice and language
7. Speech
8. Argument

Abstract:
The Spring and Autumn Annals of Master Yan is a biography of the most important statesmen and political thinkers of the Eastern Zhou dynasty China: Yan Ying (d. 500 BCE). Living through an exceptionally troubled period, he served three rulers and two dictators of the state of Qi, in Shandong Province. His experiences informed his revolutionary theories concerning the relationship between the individual and the state. Long considered to be a forgery, recent archaeological discoveries have proved the Spring and Autumn Annals of Master Yan to be a genuinely ancient text. This book provides not only the first complete translation of the text into any Western language, but a detailed analysis of the context in which it was produced.
