Heaven and Earth Are Not Humane: The Problem of Evil in Classical Chinese Philosophy 天地無仁:中國古典哲學中惡的問題

Author:
Franklin Perkins

Publisher:
Indiana University Press

Publication Year:
2014

Abstract:
That bad things happen to good people was as true in early China as it is today. Franklin Perkins uses this observation as the thread by which to trace the effort by Chinese thinkers of the Warring States Period (c.475-221 BCE), a time of great conflict and division, to seek reconciliation between humankind and the world. Perkins provides rich new readings of classical Chinese texts and reflects on their significance for Western philosophical discourse.

The Analects (Norton Critical Editions) 《論語》

Author:
Confucius

Editor:
Michael Nylan

Translator:
Simon Leys

Publication Year:
2014

Abstract:

The Norton Critical Edition aims to situate the historical figure of Kongzi, the legendary figure of Confucius, and the Analects (or Lunyu), the single most influential book ascribed to the Master's circle of disciples, within their evolving ethical, cultural, and political contexts. Simon Leys’s acclaimed translation and notes are accompanied by Michael Nylan’s insightful introduction.

Eleven essays by leading experts in the field of Chinese studies discuss a broad range of issues relating to the Analects, from the origins of the classicists (Ru) and the formation of the Analects text to the use (and abuse) of the Master’s iconic image in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Asian, diasporic, and Western settings. Collectively, these readings suggest that the Confucius we thought we knew is not the Kongzi of record and that this Kongzi is a protean figure given to rapid change and continual reevaluation.

Love and War in Ancient China: Voices from the Shijing 古代中國的愛與戰爭:《詩經》之聲

Author:
William S-Y.WANG

Publication Year:
2013

Publisher:
City University of Hong Kong Press

Abstract:
More than any other treasure, Shijing contains the historical roots of China, from which much of modern culture grew. From a lovelorn young man to an aging woman spurned by her wedded husband, from an elder statesman admonishing a young sovereign, to foot-soldiers facing the unspeakable fate of sacrificial burial, the love and war in Shijing serves as a key to unlock the cultural roots of Ancient China.

The book presents the reader with a fascinating glimpse of the peoples of Ancient China by analyzing many poems in Shijing and discussing aspects of culture and events reflected in the poems from a wide range of disciplines, including archeology, ethnography, history and linguistics.

Reading this book will enhance the general reader s knowledge of Chinese culture as well as familiarity with the language as a bare-bone . Minimalist English translation is used which enables readers to get closer to and gain a better sense and flavor of the original text.

Buddhist Stone Sturas in China: Sichuan Province 1 中國佛教石經:四川省 (第一卷)

Editors:
Lothar Ledderose (雷德侯) & Sun Hua

Publisher:
Harrassowitz, Wiesbaden

Publication Year:
2014

Abstract:

The second volume in the series dedicated to the Buddhist stone sutras in China is the first volume with the sites in Sichuan Province. These monuments are all but unknown outside China. Characteristic for Sichuan are cave chapels, hewn out of red sandstone cliffs, which each can contain tens of thousands of characters. The volume presents the Grove of the Reclining Buddha (Wofoyuan) in Anyue County, where more than a hundred such caves have been identified. In spite of the magnificence of this extraordinary site, few people have ever visited the valley, and almost nothing has been published.

This volume contains maps and extensive photographs and concentrates, in particular, on two eight century cave chapels. Engraved in their walls are ca. 71.000 characters of the Lotus Sutra, the most treasured scripture in Buddhism. This text version is here recorded for the first time. The engravings are fully reproduced in high quality detailed photographs and in ink rubbings. The scholarly apparatus of the transcription notes variant characters in the text and in the calligraphy.

The research team, led by Lothar Ledderose, includes a group at the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften, and specialists from Peking University, as well as from the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology at Chengdu. Stephen F. Teiser of Princeton contributes an essay with a wide ranging and contextual interpretation of the Lotus Sutra at the site. The volume is bilingual in Chinese and English and directed at a wide audience.
